Digital Business and New Technology
Aims and Objectives: We are living and working in a period of continual disruption, which we can define as major changes that unbalance and reorganize the ways that individuals, organizations, societies and their ecosystems connect and act. The 21st century is only 20 years old, and we have already experienced significant shocks and change following 9/11 attacks in 2001, the 2007-8 financial crisis and the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. The same period has seen the rise of China as a global and economic power. Technology centred firms like Alibaba, Amazon, Facebook, Google and Tencent have harnessed the potential of the internet to create and dominate new markets in the digital era. Concerns over the future of our planet have risen to be central to the discussions of politicians, decision makers in business and society more broadly.
Organisations of all sizes and missions are facing growing pressure from cost-conscious and eco-aware customers, employees, and governments, who are demanding affordable, yet ethically developed and high-quality products and services. Given that the digital technologies can become a potential business enabler in these contexts, it is doubtful if some of the important topics such as ethical, responsible, and sustainable innovation is currently incorporated in the digitally driven innovation strategies. Therefore, this module focuses on the dynamic and innovative digital capabilities that business professionals need to develop to meet the modern-day business challenges.
The module therefore aims to address some of the challenges through integrating innovation, the creation of value from ideas, with the digital context enabled by the “Fourth Industrial Revolution”. Topics will consider how data-driven technologies and services are radically disrupting traditional forms of social and economic value and exchange, presenting significant – perhaps unprecedented – opportunities for innovation to create a more sustainable and ethical business environment.
The aim of the module is to enable youto understand:

Using blended learning, the module is delivered online. Masterclasses and webinars will provide the underpinning knowledge and guided learning to maximise learning opportunities for each learner. There are two blocks of masterclasses (week 2 and 6th week), which will be complemented by weekly webinars. Learners can access relevant resources via Exeter Learning Environment (ELE).
Blended learning is delivered through several apps in the ELE platform, which includes online reflective journals, collaborative spaces and forums, blogs, small group learning sets using TEAMs, and masterclass using TEAMs, as well as resources with exercises, questionnaires, and one to one support from your module lead and development coaches.
The assessment is two-fold with one formative assessment through feedback on your reflections and two summative assessments through one paper and one presentation based on your learning and the value creation opportunity/opportunities you can identify for your organisation.
The different elements to each week are broken down into bit sized learning and interaction, allowing activity to be dispersed during the working day. It is important to however interact withyour cohort peers though a variety of means, to test your thinking and sense making of the areasand content being covered.

In the current, information driven era, the business needs of organisations can be complex and can change constantly in response to market trends and needs. Survival of businesses depends on the organisations’ ability to adapt, change into new and innovative ways of thinking, as well as based on the organisations’ ability to meet changing needs of both clients, businesses and beyond. |
|
It is the therefore vital for organisations to understand these needs and find ways to encourage innovation regardless of roles and responsibilities of the workforce for long-term sustainability and managers are expected to drive and contribute towards innovation cohesively.
Whilst innovation plays an integral part to achieve the strategic and operational goals of the organisation, technology is often used to facilitate such attempts.
Based on the above, create an essay based on the issues and requirements presented below; You are required to run the below questions on ChatGPT/Bard or similar, and using tracked changes, improve the overall arguments with references and examples. Part 1 1. Run this part of the question on ChatGPT/ Bard or similar: Discuss the innovation process, challenges, and the necessity for innovation for a sustainable business in the current VUCA world (Limit the Ai generated answer to approx. 500 words to allow you to improve further)
Using Tracked changes, improve the above using your own work: Using a recognised framework (e.g. simplified innovation model). Using references and examples, emphasise how the innovation mechanisms can challenge traditional business methods and practices by becoming the drivers of change and how they could improve new ways of working. |
| 2. Run this part of the Question on ChatGPT/Bard or similar: Based on the dynamic innovation capabilities of an organisation, evaluate how digital technologies/digitalisation can be used to promote ‘do better’ and ‘do different’ business culture. (Limit the Ai generated answer to approx. 500 words to allow you to improve further)
Using Tracked changes, improve the above using your own work: using pedagogical references and examples from your workplace or other organisations, emphasise why organisations should consider ethical and sustainable decisions when promoting ‘do better’ and ‘do different’ culture.
3. Run this part of the Question on ChatGPT/Bard or similar: Whilst digital technologies can improve efficiency and sustainability, the risks associated are also well noted. Discuss the importance of mitigating challenges in adopting digital technologies. (Limit the Ai generated answer to approx. 500 words to allow you to improve further)
Using Tracked changes, improve the above using your own work: Using pedagogical references, and examples from your own organisation and/or well-known security breaches, emphasise why risk management attempts should involve all tiers of the organisational workforce and not just the business leaders NOTE: Please proofread and fact check the Ai generated content, as Ai |

Part 2 4. Based your research and analysis, create a poster to promote innovative idea creation event for your organisation – Your poster should include: |
| a. Purpose of the event
b. Target audience c. Type of activities for the event Your poster should accompany a one A4 size paper describing the event, justification of the idea, and what it aims to achieve. – you should clearly justify your proposal using some evidence-based arguments. |

Be sure to evidence your conclusions fully and provide references to back up your views; we need hard arguments, not opinion or belief.

| Brief | Recognising the necessity for innovation and how the digital technologies can often be the vehicle for organisations to innovate, the senior leadership has asked you to explore opportunities within the organisation to innovate (either radically, incrementally, or both).
Therefore, based on your current business organisation, do the following tasks:
1. Present an introduction to your current organisation and its industry and sector. You will need to draw upon various information available to you i.e. company mission statement, key objectives, history of the business, markets, locations and structure 2. Using your internal knowledge, information on the public domain (online), and some qualitative and quantitative data gathered through primary and secondary research, identify an area within your department/organisation that could be improved using digital technologies, which could potentially benefit the overall business strategically and/or operationally. 3. Having recognised an area that could be improved using digital technologies, make a proposal for an innovation project to help your organisation to “do better”. Your proposal could be based on either radical or incremental innovation, or you could combine both. (Note: This is a proposal only. You DO NOT need to implement the project) Your business proposal should include the following; |
| a. Background analysis of the problem/challenge – You should use a relevant framework such as PEST, SWOT or similar for your analysis
b. Proposed solution with clearly identified strategic (long-term) and operational benefits (financial and other), c. Potential risks and mitigation measures to address those d. Scope of the project with any areas that are out of scope (SDG goals) e. Any recommendations for the organisation based on your findings |
